START OF SEASON Saturday 27 March 1999 and Sunday
Richard Cannon
Saturday morning started with a work party to spruce up the Club for the Start of Season Party in the evening and to move the rescue boat back into the water following some repairs and servicing by Brian Clements during the winter. The weather was beautiful; like a summer's day.
We found a new member; a duck had made her nest in the Joan Garrett's garden area along side the race hut and was sitting on some eggs, it was not as peaceful as when she made the nest.
For the Start of Season Party Mary Dennis suggested a talk and slide show by Suzanne and Tony Curphy. Over 50 members and friends enjoyed an extremely interesting presentation with a large number of slides of very exotic locations. See Mike Baker’s report.
For several years the season has started with strong currents but this year there was only about 1knt. On Sunday it was warm and there didn't seem much wind, but by the 11:30 race time there was a force 2-4 Westerly so there was a good sail for the excellent entry of 11 boats. Charles Dennis had a full immersion capsize in his new Graduate without a wet suit!
We now have a fleet of three Graduates as Graham Thompson started the trend and the Club has also just acquired one. Keith Hatton used the Club Graduate and very nearly had the same fate as Charles.
The new policy of races starting at the published time has begun well with all three races starting on time; 3 boats were a bit late for the start of the first race but they lost out very little as there had been a lull in the wind and the others were trying to make the line against the current.
